Each one of these fatty acids offers its own unique set of benefits. For instance, fish oil is one of the richest food sources of two types of omega-3 fatty acids known as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These omega-3s may help support the normal, healthy blood clotting process in the body, along with, healthy levels of cholesterol and triglycerides. Flax oil is rich in a different type of omega-3 known as alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). ALA is converted to omega-3 fatty acids in the body. Meanwhile, flax combined with borage oil complete the omega puzzle by filling in omega-6 in both the linoleic acid and gamma linoleic acid forms, as well as, omega-9 oleic acid. Trying to get all of these different fatty acids in your diet in the right ratio can be difficult.
