Also called the Bluespotted Ribbontail ray, this colorful creature is found in the Indian and western Pacific Oceans. It gets its name from the electric blue spots on its back. The Blue Spotted Ray was originally described by Swedish naturalist Peter Forsskal in 1775. Despite sharing a genus with the Marble Ray, some scientists believe it may be more closely related to the freshwater stingrays of the Amazon River. The Blue Spotted Ray is a near-threatened species, largely due to the destruction of its coral reef habitat. It is also collected for aquariums, although it does not do very well in captivity.
