Description

Product Description: VL53L5CX Mini Time-Of-Flight Imager - Distance Sensor - 4000mm - I2C - Qwiic - SparkFun SEN-19013

Digital distance sensor measuring based on the Time-of-Flight (ToF) solution. Based on the VL53L5CX chip , which integrates the SPAD array, physical infrared filters and diffractive optical elements (DOE) to achieve the best possible performance in a variety of ambient lighting conditions. The module uses the I2C bus . It also comes with a Qwiic connector to ease the design process. The measuring range of the sensor is 400 cm , the supply voltage is 3.3 V. (permissible range from 2.7 V to 3.3 V).

The VL53L5CX requires a firmware download (approx. 90 KB) when powered via the I2C bus. The manufacturer recommends microcontrollers with a sufficient amount of flash memory. At the same time, he points out that the popular Arduino Uno platform does not have enough memory.

Presentation of the applications of the Qwiic system .

What is Qwiic?

Qwiic SparkFun is an ecosystem that includes numerous sensors based on the I2C bus, executive modules and dedicated cables. The main assumption of this solution is to improve the prototyping process. All elements supporting the Qwiic standard use a common, 4-pin JST connector with a spacing of 1 mm. This reduces the amount of space required on the PCB. It also protects against connection inconsistent with the polarity.

Example application of the VL53L5CX sensor
  • 3D room mapping
  • Detecting obstacles in robotics
  • Gesture recognition
  • IoT and AR / VR projects
The pins of the module

The VL53L5CX Mini ToF Imager module has terminals in the form of solder pads , located at the longer edge of the board:

  • GND - the ground of the system
  • 3v3 - power supply
  • SDA - I2C data line
  • SCL - I2C clock line
  • INT - interrupt output (default with open drain)
  • RST - I2C reset pin, active high. It is connected to ground with a 47 kΩ resistor

On the board we can also find, among others two Qwiic connectors and a LED indicating power supply of the module. Details are available in the user manual prepared by the manufacturer.
