It is placed in front of the ball lead to protect your connecting knot from repeated shocks which could damage it and weaken the resistance of your line. The many facets reflect multiple attractive reflections in all directions. In contact with lead, they also produce a clear sound (high frequency vibrations) which attracts predators over great distances.
